The things they say when they think we're not listening

“Studies show that no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted more than, you know, a few decades. So it’s the death knell of this country.”

“I honestly think it’s the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam – which I think is a big threat, OK?”

When Oklahoma State Representative Sally Kern said these disgraceful and disgusting words, she thought no one was listening.

Speaking before a group of her supporters at what she believed was a private gathering, the Republican lawmaker viciously attacked LGBT Americans. But, every word of Rep. Kern’s bigoted tirade was caught on tape. Take a minute to read more of Rep. Kern’s anti-gay diatribe, where she says things like:

“The homosexual agenda is destroying this nation.”

“I’m not gay bashing, but according to God’s word that is not the right kind of lifestyle. It has deadly consequences for those people involved in it.”

“You know gays are infiltrating city councils.”

And you can listen to Rep. Kern first-hand on this video:

After she was exposed, Rep. Kern refused to apologize. In fact, she has even appeared on television to repeat her outrageous assertions.

You know that Rep. Kern is not alone in her extremism. Behind her is a legion of right-wing political organizations spreading homophobia. They think it’s a disgrace that I’m in Congress, and they are working hard to silence me and other LGBT public officials, who as Rep. Kern puts it, are “infiltrating” our government.

As the only out lesbian in Congress, I am always a top target of the radical right, and this election year is no different.

They can’t stand the fact I’m working to expand workplace anti-discrimination laws to LGBT Americans. It infuriates them that I’m leading the effort to pass stronger hate crimes laws. And when they hear about my work to extend domestic partner benefits to federal employees, they grow more determined to defeat me.

I’m asking strong supporters, like you, to help show Rep. Kern and her cronies that they can’t get away with this kind of hate speech by offering your personal response to this disgraceful episode in the comment section below.

Make no mistake: our opponents have the resources and the will to make good on their political threats against me.

Please help make a strong statement for equality—one that will stand in stark contrast to Rep. Kern’s hateful words —in the comments below.

I was saddened and appalled when I read the comments made by Rep. Kern. It is truly disgusting to discover that there is someone with the power to make laws in this country have these kind of views. It is an honor to have Rep. Tammy Baldwin represent me and the great state of Wisconsin in our nation's capitol. It is important to me that I have someone with honesty, integrity, compassion, and knowledge in Washington addressing the problems and concerns of our state and our country.

I am a Union Sheet Metal Worker and have been for 32 years. When I was young I heard the old timers say the most ignorant and hateful things against gays and minorities you can imagine. Once they were exposed to minorities and gays they became enlightened and now accept them as human beings, no better or worse then themselves. These comments have no place in our society. We cannot allow our leaders to advance themselves or their ideologies through the denigration of another segment of our society. Her comments should disgust us all. Peace

Thank you Representative Baldwin, for championing fairness, tolerance, truth, justice and the American way in such an affirmative and positive fashion. I'm honored to be represented by you. Your dedication to equity and your courageous stance againts facism is very much appreciated.

TOLERANCE is the hallmark of an advancing society--and a lack of tolerance is what leads to witch hunts, lynchings, and discrimination. Treating people differently because of a sexual orientation that involves two consenting adults is no different than discriminating on the basis of gender, race, or disability: it's just wrong. I couldn't be happier to be represented by Tammy Baldwin, and feel that Madison is one of the luckiest communities in the US for exactly that reason. Keep up the great work on behalf of ALL Americans!

How is it that we are still having this conversation? How is it that this culture is still so full of ALL kinds of bigotry? It's 2008. No flying cars, and no bigot-free society. This is not the world I promised my children. I'll live without the flying cars. I cannot live with bigots. The far right appeals less and less to the mainstream, because while the mainstream evolves, the far right lags behind. Way behind. Shame on Rep. Kern. She should be talking about poverty, homelessness, the war and the environment. Not that I expect her to. That would be lgical and helpful.

I am glad to live in Wisconsin so I don't have to listen to Rep. Kern. She sounds like a very uneducated bigotted person; it is amazing that she got elected to such an important office. We are fortunate to have somebody like Rep. Baldwin represent us in Washington. She is dedicated to public service and very courageoous. I appreciate her support and stand on so many issues that people of integrity care about.
I certainly will support her campaign for re-election!

Hi Tammy. First of all, let me thank you for representing all of us! What Oklahoma Rep. Sally Kern said, was ignorant and despicable. I come from a very diverse family. My daughter and her wife are both college educated, hard working, law abiding citizens. I don't understand why their sexual preference would be of interest to our national security. That is just bizarre....to equate a terrorist with a homosexual? This woman is not only homophobic, but a danger to her community. Maybe even her own family.... These are the kind of parents some LGBT people have to contend with. That's why so many stay in the closet, or live life on the down low. I guarantee, there is one in her family. Too bad they will never trust her enough to talk to her openly. She needs to take her political butt to a couple gay bars and talk to people. These kinds of attitudes do not belong in this country in 2008. This is the UNITED States of America. Stay brave and courageous Tammy. This is a political platform that your constituients hope you continue to address. It needs to be addressed. By the way, My only daughter had to move to California so that she and Bianca could live the life that was meant for them. They both work for the University, one a Professor and the other Student Affairs Officer. They are both doing their darnest to destroy this nation! lol How laughable can Kern get? Sad because she was serious.

Re: The things they say when they think we're not listening    By cgervasi on 4/21/2008 10:17 PM
Rep. Kern's comments are disgraceful. She starts off saying she's not "gay bashing". If her comments that follow are not gay bashing, then what is?

Even if all the lies bigots tell were true, what would it mean for public policy? Is making life more difficult for people by denying then equal marriage rights going to make the people go away?

As a society we are on the cusp of rejecting this bigotry outright. It's a similar pattern to equal rights among races or among women and men: We haven't achieved complete equality, but everyone agrees equality is a good goal. That will happen with LGBT people as well.

I listened long enough to know that Sally Kern's comments are asinine. She should be ignored altogether.

I don't even know where to begin. It is sad that people can be so ignorant and hateful at the same time. Tammy, thank you for being such a great role model -- not only to the LGBTQ community, but to your constituents and your fellow citizens. I’m truly proud when I tell others that you are my representative in Congress.

Re: The things they say when they think we're not listening    By DebGundy on 4/22/2008 9:15 AM
As usual, Tammy Baldwin takes the high road in her approach to issues by promoting an agenda of equity, fairness and tolerance while Rep. Kern takes the low road by blaming a group of people for the ills and troubles in the world. Isn't it interesting that the Rep. Kern, who probably thinks of herself as a person of high, moral character isn't high or moral at all. What is she doing to make the world a better place? Placing blame and bashing. Oh ye of lesser integrity and ignorance--get thee out of the House of Representatives. Thank you Tammy for making a difference.

Re: The things they say when they think we're not listening    By lostdreams on 4/22/2008 9:40 AM
I was born and raised in the state of Wisconsin. I attended both parochial and public schools beginning in 1973 and will be graduating this coming May with a second higher education degree.

I have also traveled to various other states within this nation, as well as to other countries abroad—including the Netherlands… one of those societies that have “embraced homosexuality”. Somehow it doesn’t appear the Dutch will be crumbling any time soon, and if they do, I highly doubt it will be because of their acceptance of human beings and individual rights to live as each sees fit for themselves.

In 2007, I wrote a piece in response to the horrendous ignorance I came across in regard to the SB 777 Bill in the state of California titled “Vision of Someday” (footnote below). The statements made by Representative Kern, OK, which I heard here in sound bites, reminded me of the narrow and/or closed-minded opinions and ‘fears’ of those who were so opposed to SB 777 a year ago.

Enough is enough!

When I was in elementary school, we were taught to sit ‘Indian style’ on the floor—today, that term has been replaced with ‘pretzel-legged’ because children are being taught not to be offensive to others or other cultures.

In the 1970s and early 1980s, I can recall the thoughts and opinions of adults I knew who were utterly appalled at the ‘displays’ of interracial couples. ‘Those people need to stay with their own kind’ was a common statement made by many. Today, although there are still individuals with personal dislike for interracial couples, it has become far more accepted and will continue to become so.

As I wrote last year, it is my hope that: “Some day my grandchildren or their children will be tolerant and accepting of others based upon their actions and deeds, not what their sexual orientation is. Some day, teaching children about the differences of others will not equate to some phobic, ignorant belief that those young people "will catch it"!”

This thoughtless diatribe is just another example of the thin veneer wearing off the true colors of a, bigoted elected official. In this case it reveals a very ugly color, one that I hoped might have been left behind in our Congress, consigned to the past. What does it take to make the Right realize that the rights guaranteed by the Constitution are for all Americans?

Re: The things they say when they think we're not listening    By sylvia on 4/22/2008 2:19 PM
It continues to amaze me that there is such ignorance and intolerance in our world. Even if she only thought 50 people were hearing what she was saying, how dare she?! And how dare the 50 or so people in that room sit there and accept what she was saying? Women like her make me wish I wasn't a lesbian! Thank God I live in Wisconsin where we're not afraid to hire an openly gay woman to represent us. I have never been more proud to call Ms. Tammy Baldwin my representative :)

Re: The things they say when they think we're not listening    By graysev on 4/22/2008 2:20 PM
I know there are still those who are against gays and lesbians, but to say something so bigoted is outrageous.I may be a straight person, but I have known many gays in the past.I know that Tammy Baldwin has done a great job as our congresswoman and I really don't care that she is openly gay. That is her business. If Rep.Kern is that offended, then she should take leave of office.Gay bashing is just as bad as spray painting KKK on a Hmong's new truck in the town of Windsor.People can be so cruel.

How can the American people elect representatives who would make such heinous remarks? These representatives do NOT represent the views of most Americans and only serve to divide people and create hatred for one another. Is there anyway to "impeach" such a person before she uses her tongue to futher instigate disharmony?

One of the most pernicious lies circulating in America is that seuxal orientation somehow dictates a person's character. As a straight/heterosexual woman in a 22 year marriage, I can testify that some of my most revered role models are gays and lesbians who have maintained faithful and committed partnerships much longer than mine in the face of hardships that have not tested me! They have hung in there with each other through poverty, chronic illness, long-term care of handicpaped parents...AND the increasing barrage of dispicable, small-minded, self-righteously ignorant and hateful bigotry from many in our culture. Not to mention constant discrimination enshried in our laws. Gay does not mean "immoral"...Ms. Kern, I'm sorry for you and your fearful, hate-filled, artificially limited life.

Mail Response -- Re: The things they say...    By Elizabeth, Milwaukee, WI on 5/3/2008 2:47 PM
I belive that Sally Kern is all wrong. I am glad she is not from Wisconsin. I believe that the strength of our country is its diversity. All the various ethnic and religious groups have added so many wonderful things to our lifestyle. Our country would be so much diminished without all kinds of people.

Mail Response -- Re: The things they say...    By Karen, Madison, WI on 5/3/2008 2:51 PM
If Oklahoma State Representative Sally Kern gained her present position by promising the people of Oklahoma that she was capable of representing all of them and could and would do so fairly, she lied.

Instead, she has publicly insulted many of those same people and their families and children. Her poisonous generalizations have surely infuriated those who have gay family members, some of whom are now fighting in Iraq. And her silly generalizations have cuased the rest of us to question the sanity of one who "honestly thinks" that any person whose sexual orientation differs from that of the self-destructive Sally Kern's is therefore "a bigger threat to our whole country than terrorism or Islam!"

Mail Response -- Re: The things they say...    By David, Middleton, WI on 5/3/2008 2:54 PM
I believe Rep. Sally Kern's comments portray ideas that are both discriminating and divisive at a time when every right guaranteed within our Constitution is under attack by the far right. The social, political and economic health of this country has deteriorated over the last 8-16 years as the far right seeks to enforce a singular view of our country that is at odds with our pluralistic history. Not only is the witch hunt destructive to our society, it prevents the rest of our society from addressing the real issues which are dragging our country down. Tammy, keep up the good work.

Mail Response -- Re: The things they say...    By Richard, Shirley, NY on 5/3/2008 2:56 PM
To Rep. Sally Kern: It's a shame that people like you and right wing politicians are still spewing the same old garbage, using lies and half truths to distort the facts. It's a shame that you people don't have better things to do with your lives than to spread hate and discrimination. Especially when you and others are representatives of our government and can influence many people. We will never reach the level of tolerence in this country that we speak about because of people like you and your friends. Look in the mirror!

It is truly amazing in this age, anyone can belive there is a "homosexual agenda." If there is one, someone please tell me what it is. All I seek is equality in treatment as any other tax paying, God believing, US citizen.

As a non-practicing heterosexual (I'm 86!) I was horrified to read your words. I thought we had conquered this idiocy. I have been thrilled that I had lived to see a possible black president and that many members of Congress are openly gay. And then I read [Rep. Kern's] ignorant words and wonder that there are still such beliefs. This proves that we need better education and compassion. I hope it is not too late.

I find these comments to be irresponsible and ill-informed. It cheapens our democracy when someone tries to politicize a group of people for their own political gain. I stand with the gays and lesbians of Oklahoma, and I wish them much success in retiring this hateful person from politics. She does not represent the opinion of thoughtful Americans in Oklahoma or anywhere else. We must respond to hate mongers like this representative, so that the next generation of gay and lesbian youth will not have to be subjected to this. We must demand better representation. There are plenty of good people in American, who realize the value of ALL human beings!

I have seen gay couples raise wonderful children and I have seen a "normal" couple raise dysfunctional children. Don't tell me about the "bad social influence" of gays...Our constitution gives every individual the same rights as everybody else as long as they do not harm others.

Mail Response -- Re: The things they say...    By Margaret, Bloomfield, MI on 5/3/2008 4:45 PM
Rep. Sally Kern must learn to appreciate ALL people, whether they are gay or straight. Everyone has something to contribute to our society.

As the mother of a wonderful lesbian woman, I am personally very offended by Rep. Kern's comments. My daughter works in a veterinarian's office and lives quietly out in the country with her partner and their cats and dogs. She raises a large garden and keeps her co-workers supplied with vegetables each summer. I fail to see how she can be considered a threat to anyone. We need more representatives like Tammy Baldwin fighting for equal rights and respect for people like my daughter.

It is sad that so many people are blind to the breadth of the human race. Perhaps they fear the unfamiliar and that sometimes becomes hate. One needs only to travel in a foreign land to find that people who may seem different are kind, thoughtful and ready to help.

I am friends with several people whose sexual orientation is different from mine. Yet they have the same standards of integrity, kindness and love of family that I have...Sally Kern, grasp the hand of someone quite different from you...then have lunch together. You just might make a new friend.

Hello-
I don't know State Rep. Sally Kern; I'm not sure if Oklahoma Sate Representatives affirm allegienace to the U.S. Constitution but if she considers herself an American citizen, I would like to remind her to re-acquaint herself with The preamble to the Constitution:
"We the people of The United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish This Constitution of the United States of America."
If Ms. Kern does not believe in the spirit of the values of our country perhaps she does a disservice in attempting to represent it.

Just when you think you've heard all the anti-gay slurs, some one like Rep. Sally Kern appears and links you with terrorism and the indoctrination of small children. I'm so glad to see Tammy Baldwin speaking out against this outrage and letting Rep. Kern know that she can't hide the bigotry and hatred behind closed doors. She is in the open now.

It horrifies and saddens us to read Sally Kern's words. It is hard to understand why, in 2008, there are people who still feel the LGBT population is somehow different than everyone else. This country needs to realize, what so many others already have- that equality for ALL PEOPLE is what is so needed in this world.

The statements by the Oklahoma Sate Representative Sally Kern were not only distasteful but reflected ignorance or bias or both.

I support Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin in her continuing efforts to ensure that all Americans, regardless of race, religion and sexual orientation, are treated equally, with dignity and free from bias and discrimination.

Rep. Kern has the right to express her views, but as an elected official she doesn't have the right to only represent people who look, think, and act like her. I wonder what other groups she excludes? What is she afraid of? I would hope that she will be excluded from our government after the next election!

Mail Response - - Re: The things they say when they think we're not listening    By Laura, Atlanta, GA on 5/8/2008 11:49 AM
Dear Ms. Kern,
You are misinformed regarding homosexuality- I hope you aren't afraid to do more research on the subject; before you make yourself appear more foolish, take time to discover what reputable scientists and respected doctors know. Also I would remind you that your Bible tells you, in many passages, that everything and everyone God made, He pronounced good. Please do not continue to flaunt your ignorance. Don't be afraid to study further.

Since my wonderful daughter (a university professor) happens to be lesbian, I am especially horrified and offended by your hateful speech. I can only hope that as you meet and interact with more and more people, both straight and gay, you will come to realize that there are many good people and a few 'bad apples" in any group.

What should never be tolerated is hate and discrimination!
As long as anyone is a law abiding citizen and wants to just go about their everyday life working hard, contributing to the good of society, "please just leave them alone."
Being gay I don't believe has anything at all to do with destroying this nation. All the hatred is what's destroying this nation. Wake Up!
If Representatives like you, Sally Kern, would put all their efforts into the real problems of the world, the war, the economy, health care, then we would be a lot better off.

The dishonorable Sally Kern says "They have more suicides and they're more discouraged..." She is oblivious to the fact that it's the Sally Kerns of the world who are the mothers and sisters of the people who are driven to suicide by this lunatic homophobia.
The country will be watching Sally Kern's next election as closely as we will be watching that of the honorable Tammy Baldwin. I suppose Sally Kern has done LGBT civil rights a big favor - such openness on her part will help catapult the thinking of many open-minded individuals who realize the need to openly address this ignorant extremism.

As an elected leader in the United States, you have the responsibility to support the "life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness" of all Americans.
Toward that goal, remember the inspired and inspiring words of the a great Republican President upon taking his second term of office: "With malice toward none and charity to all..." Mr. Lincoln is the model al of us should emulate.

It's a terrible shame that Rep. Kern is so fearful and threatened by people who don't believe or behave exactly as she does. It continues to be a sad statement that our legislatures too often use their positions to promote an agenda of hate and discrimination. Representative Kern's understanding of history is obviously also a biased view of the past. The promotion of an American that values all individuals and offers equal rights and opportunities is a cause that all of us should be fighting for. To say that gays offer a greater threat than Islam is a blatant lie and an unfortunate voluntary admittance on her part of Rep. Sally Kern's ignorance.

As a former minister in a conservative Christian church who lost my right to be a minister when i decided to come out, I listen to Rep. Kern's comments and feel an incredible sadness. In the name of Christ, hatred and discrimination is being perpetuated. The very un-christlike behavior becoming the trademark of the so called preservers of the faith. They would like nothing more than to drag us down to their level. To engage us in a different war of hatred -against them and their rhetoric. Hatred is hatred. So, let's stand for something - for basic human rights, dignity, and equality. for a positive message for people willing to live an honest life in spite of the Rep. Kerns of society.

I find the comments made by Rep. Sally Kern of Oklahoma regarding homosexuality to be reprehensible and unacceptable. Shame on you, Rep. Kern, for spreading lies and hate. Shame on you, Rep. Kern, for continuing to spew divisive venom with no basis in truth that tears Americans apart instead of uniting us. You say in your comments that you are not "gay bashing"-- you're doing something even more unbecoming of a state representative, you're lying. You say homosexuality "has deadly consequences for those people involved in it." Why is it, then, that the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community is one of the most vibrant and lively communities in this country? We are out in public, we are proud of who we are, and comments like yours will not stop us from fighting to achieve fairness. Because that is all we want Rep. Kern - fairness and equality, like every other American. You can continue to spread lies and fear, but we will just continue to fight for our basic rights as Americans and we will win.

They are certainly not consistent with the teachings of Jesus Christ and we will stand with our gay brothers and sisters against this kind of rhetoric. May you find a way to let love and tolerance into your heart
